Cervical spinal injuries

Colin Javens' level of spinal injury is classified as C5/C6 Complete. There are seven separate bones in the neck (cervical section) C1 at the top, C7 at the lower end: Colin fractured C4, C5 and C6, however he only damaged his spinal cord at C5 and C6. A complete injury such as Colin's means that no message can pass up or down the spinal column at C5/C6, ( someone with an incomplete injury can have additional movement as some messages can pass at the damaged section of the spinal cord) .

This means that Colin has no movement from below his shoulders. He has fully functional bicep movement, however arm movement is reduced, as his triceps no longer work. Additionally Colin has no movement in his hands apart from a pinching grip in his right hand that results from having extension/flexion movement in his wrist. His body can also no longer regulate its own temperature, which means extreme heat and cold is a risk.
